As the Sun enters Aquarius, we are invited to embrace fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
My heart and mind have been occupied these past few days with the passing of one of my muses, the iconic artist and director David Lynch. A powerhouse of creative innovation, Lynch was also a longtime practitioner of Transcendental Meditation, dedicating 20 minutes each morning and evening to quieting his mind and going within. This kind of inner exploration seems to be a defining theme of 2025, a year linked via numerology to The Hermit card—a symbol of introspection and seeking inner wisdom—and can be likened to the experience of a daydream. And within this dream, we are given the space to explore, innovate, and imagine new ways of being.
Lynch believed that creativity does not spring from suffering or despair. In fact, he felt that a clear mind and an open heart were essential for catching the fragments of ideas that could then attract larger concepts, eventually manifesting as a film, painting, or any creative endeavor. For Lynch, meditation was a way to go deep, to search for the "big fish" that would inspire him to continue creating and dreaming.
“Ideas are so beautiful and they’re so abstract. And they do exist someplace. I don’t know if there’s a name for it. And I think they exist, like fish. And I believe that if you sit quietly, like you’re fishing, you will catch ideas. The real, you know, beautiful, big ones swim kinda deep down there, so you have to be very quiet, and you know, wait for them to come along.” (Lynch, source)
The Two of Swords is primarily a card of choice. It reminds us that there is more than one way forward. We often pretend that we don't have control, or we ignore the responsibility of choice because it feels overwhelming to take ownership of the outcomes. This card serves as a reminder that we always have access to an inner flow of truth—our intuition.
“Life is full of abstractions, and the way we make heads or tails of it is through our intuition.” (Lynch, source)
Many times, the world we live in simply does not make sense. It is up to us to discern what the abstractions of life mean. When there is no clear path forward, we are given space to dream. Our perspective, state of mind, and the way we choose to see the world are the primary tools we have to navigate tragedy, disaster, and suffering. While our mindset cannot change external realities, it can offer a lens through which we recognize the good and allow hope to thrive in our hearts and minds.
“If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.”
(Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden)
We cannot sit back and hope that truth will be dictated to us, nor can we expect the best choice to be handed to us by some outside force. It is up to us to piece together the puzzle of life, shaping it into something that aligns with our goals and desires. In this way, there are many "right" choices. The key is understanding which choice makes the most sense for us, which will move us toward a better future, and which feels most aligned. The work we must do to foster compassion and justice is primarily an inside job. Through exploring our inner worlds, we may discover the secret garden of our lives. By looking toward the light and opening ourselves to inspiration, we can catch up the ideas that float in the collective understanding of this vast and mysterious experiment called life.
Reflection Questions:
What ideas have been quietly swimming beneath the surface of my consciousness, waiting to be noticed?
How can I cultivate a clearer state of mind to better receive inspiration and guidance?
In what areas of my life am I avoiding choice, and how can I step into my personal power with confidence?
