Through the solstice portal — clear mind, clear heart, clear vision.
Our cards this week ground us in reality. At the center of our spread, we see the Wheel of Fortune reversed. The Wheel of Fortune represents cycles of all kinds—both the turning of the year and the phases within our own lives. We’ve passed through the gateway of the solstice and now find ourselves embarking on a new season.
This change can be felt both in the physical sense of winter’s arrival and in the metaphorical sense of time passing in our own lives. The Wheel of Fortune reminds us that we are both in control of our free will and, at the same time, subject to circumstances beyond our control. Upright, the Wheel heralds a new phase of life and a change in fortune. Reversed, it can represent misfortune or a period of stagnation. But sometimes, the position of the Wheel doesn’t determine the nature of the change—we do. The future is shaped by our attitude and our willingness to accept the situation as it is.
The holidays, while festive, can be difficult for many. Winter, with its cold and chilling beauty, often brings seasonal depression or anxiety about storms and misfortune. We cannot control the changing seasons, nor can we stop the storms from rolling in. But we can do our best to meet these changes with optimism and acceptance.
I chose the Cactus Flower Oracle this week because of its link to resilience. Cacti are designed to withstand adversity, adapting to harsh conditions and thriving in extreme environments. The stark nature of reality encourages us to see things as they truly are. Clear vision is the first step toward acceptance, and acceptance is a mindset that is within our control. As the Stoic philosopher Epictetus wrote, “The chief task in life is simply this: to identify what is in your power and what is not.” Failing to accept things as they are often leads to disappointment and frustration. Living in a fantasy world might offer temporary relief but isn’t a suitable long-term strategy for happiness or success.
Paired with this message is the Deck card from the Winter Solstice Oracle, which asks us to look closely at the details of our environment. Again, we are asked to take measure of what we can control. What can we do to create a space that will nurture and support us through the cold, dark days ahead? How can we prepare, what actions can we take, and where might we focus our energy to help counteract the harshness of the season?
As we close out this week’s reading, take a moment to reflect on the wisdom of cycles and the resilience within you. Each season, whether literal or metaphorical, offers its own lessons and opportunities for growth. As we settle into the rhythms of winter, may you find clarity, strength, and a sense of peace in knowing what is in your power and what is not.
Remember, you’ve made it through every season before, and you have the tools to navigate this one as well. Whether that means creating small rituals of comfort, preparing for the storms ahead, or simply taking time to rest and reflect, know that even the smallest efforts to care for yourself matter.
Reflection Questions:
How can you cultivate resilience in your current circumstances?
What can you do to nurture and support yourself this winter?
How does clear vision help you accept reality and move forward with grace?
Thank you for taking this moment to tune in. Wishing you warmth, resilience, and clarity in the days ahead.
Have a beautiful week,
-Sara
